SilverFast 8 for Epson Expression 1640XL

I’ve downloaded the demo version of 8 (OS 10.9.1) and it doesn’t “see” my 1640XL, which I have attached by FireWire. Could that be the problem?
VueScan works fine but I’d rather upgrade my old SilverFast (esp. if you’re working on the Microtek ArtixScan 120tf).

unfortunately FireWire is the problem, correct.
Please connect the 1640XL via USB and OS X 10.9 shouldn’t have any problems finding it.
